For all of you near, or around, Ojai, California, I will be at the Ojai Art Center this coming Monday night (November 10th) at 7 pm.  You will get to meet the great Ruth Sayre as well as the magnificent Simon Sayre.  You will get to meet Liz Grumette, as well, and I am certain that she is great, but I will meet her that evening.  I will speak on the history of writing the novel, I will read a passage from the novel, and I will sign copies of the book as well.  A good, if not swell, time will be had by all.

An extension of the SCIBA dinner on Saturday, I have been happily visiting local independent booksellers and meeting the greatest people.  I was at Village Books in Pacific Palisades today, and Mia was kind enough to find my book and plans to give it to Connie and Katie.  I’m in the Palisades at least once a week for the boys’ baseball visit to Mitch, often on Sundays, but now I figure I can bring them along, in their baseball pants and cleats, to visit the store. 

It appears that I will make an appearance at the Ojai Arts Center on November 10th at 7 pm, to talk about Sweetsmoke and read.  I will have time to read for a longer stretch there, and will choose a scene that I have wanted to read for some time now.  The piece I often read is one of which I am proud, and I can do it comfortably in about five minutes, but it really mostly shows writing chops, as opposed to telling story.  That is what happens with five whole minutes, naturally.  But I do look forward to doing a little more.  And the section I intend to read is when Cassius sneaks into the big house to find Hoke’s maps, thereby encountering Charles’s cat, and then encountering… okay, spoiler alert, maybe I’d better stop there.
